Question 1

How and when am I paid?

Accepted Answer

Sponsors receive a competitive stipend based on the level of care the individual requires. Payment begins once a placement is active, and we review the exact rate and payment schedule with you before you agree to a match.

Question 2

How long does the application process take?

Accepted Answer

It varies with how quickly background checks, training, and the home assessment are completed — typically several weeks to a few months from first inquiry to placement. Responsive paperwork on your side is the biggest accelerator.

Question 3

Do I have to own my home, or can I rent?

Accepted Answer

You can rent. The home must meet safety and licensing standards and provide a private bedroom, and where your lease requires it you will need written landlord permission.

Question 4

What exactly is 'backup staff'?

Accepted Answer

A backup caregiver is a trained, background-checked person who does not live in your household and can step in when you need time away, have an appointment, or face an emergency. Identifying backup coverage is required before placement.

Question 5

Is this a job or a partnership?

Accepted Answer

Residential Sponsors are independent partners, not hourly employees. You are compensated with a stipend rather than a wage, and DE-Trans provides training, oversight, and support around your household.

Question 6

What happens right after I submit the contact form?

Accepted Answer

A member of our team reviews your inquiry and reaches out — usually within one to two business days — to answer questions, confirm your service area, and outline next steps if you would like to continue.

Question 7

Do I need caregiving experience or a specific degree?

Accepted Answer

No degree beyond a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Prior caregiving experience helps, but patience, dependability, and willingness to complete training matter more. We provide the certifications.

Question 8

Can I work another job while being a sponsor?

Accepted Answer

Many sponsors do, particularly when the individual attends a day program or works. It depends on the person's support needs and your backup coverage — we work through that during matching.

Question 9

How many individuals would live with me?

Accepted Answer

Sponsored Residential homes typically support one or two individuals, depending on your household capacity and what is right for the people involved.

Question 10

Where in Virginia does DE-Trans operate?

Accepted Answer

We recruit and support sponsors across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Tell us your city or county in the contact form and we will confirm coverage in your area.
